Mike McKim is the founder and CEO of Cuvée Coffee Roasting Company, a Texas based micro-roaster of specialty coffee from all corners of the world. Cuvee Coffee was founded in 1998 and since then has established itself as one of the nation’s premier specialty coffee roasters.
Mike has worked in several areas of the coffee business. He started as a sales manager for Espresso Specialists, Inc. (now Franke Coffee Systems North America). There, Mike became proficient in the many aspects of the wholesale and retail coffee industry and built relationships with coffee vendors, business owners, and industry executives.
With that company, Mike covered the southeast region, then south central region, supplying coffee businesses across 14 different states with high-end La Marzocco espresso and grinding equipment. Later, he served as the company’s coffee quality specialist, partnering with specialty coffee roasters throughout North America. Mike moved on from Espresso Specialists after five years, but was retained by Espresso Specialists as a contract consultant for the next two years.
Mike is active in civic and professional coffee circles. He was elected and served as a Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Barista Guild regional chapter representative from 2005 to 2008. He also was elected, and has just finished his second term, to the SCAA’s Roasters Guild Executive Council.
Mike’s passion for the industry was inspired by a single cup of expertly roasted coffee prepared for him on a ski trip in 1998. Shortly after that, Mike bought a roaster with a friend and launched a coffee business. Later, he bought the other half of the business and Cuvée Coffee was born.
For the first nine years, Mike ran Cuvée Coffee as a side business. Cuvée Coffee realized increasing success, doubling its revenues each of the last three years, and in 2007, Mike took the company full-time. His vision for Cuvee Coffee is based on producing quality, sustainable specialty coffee through strong direct relationships with farmers, exporters, importers, and independent coffee house owners.
Mike has been interviewed by and profiled in the Houston Business Journal, Houston Public Radio, Austin Public Radio and several Houston and Austin-area newspapers and his articles have been published in Barista and Franke Coffee Bar magazines.
Mike is a Gulf War veteran, having served in the United States Navy from 1989-1992. He and his wife Rashelle and their two children live in Spicewood, Texas.
