While most of us are looking forward to vacations, barbecues in the park and more, 17 million children in America will be facing greater risk of going hungry this summer. And if we don’t act now, these kids will be facing missed meals and hungry stomachs instead of the fun childhood summers they deserve.
When schools let out for summer break, many low-income families aren’t able to afford the healthy meals their children would normally receive during the rest of the academic year. It’s a stressful time for these parents, who have to stretch their food budgets even further and consider the possibility of forcing their children to skip meals if they can’t make ends meet.
There is a solution — free and nutritious summer meals available to kids and teens age 18 and under at thousands of summer meals sites across the country. But the problem is that these programs only reach 1 in 7 children who receive a free or reduced price school lunch — that’s 17 million kids who aren’t getting fed in the summer!
